BOWEL MANAGEMENT
If there's something that can be fixed surgically, we'll look into it. Believe me, we're surgeons and if there's something to fix that's what we do best. But for many patients, bowel management is the key to getting clean. It's over 95% successful in getting people clean and out of diapers. We institute bowel management over the course of a week. This includes the initial evaluation, teaching, and adjusting the treatment regimen each day until things are working well. We have most patients clean within a week.
If you think bowel management may be right for you or your child, contact us on our contact page and inquire about a consultation and bowel management week.
Some patients, either due to a malformation, prior surgery, or simply an unexplainable motility issue, are not able to have normal continence the way most people do. They may suffer from fecal incontinence. This means they have stool accidents or they soil their underwear. This is a very difficult problem. Having stool accidents are not something life threatening, but they are devastating to a person's well being. This is especially so in a child. Adults can sometimes understand (note, I say 'sometimes') when another adult in their workplace has a medical problem and may have an off smell from time to time, or may need to go to the bathroom to clean up frequently. School children do not understand such things, and they can be terribly hurtful. This can be devastating, especially now in the era of social media.
